Microsoft to push 2 inexpensive notebooks Chromebook Digitimes Research: Microsoft to push two cheap notebooks in mid-2015 to counter Chromebook penetration Although the launches of cheap Chromebooks using Rockchip's solutions were postponed recently, Google is not giving up designs to release such products in 2015, forcing Microsoft, which has been closely monitoring Chromebook development, to release new cheap projects targeting the schooling and consumer markets. The projects are 11.6-inch clamshell-type notebooks priced at US$149-179 and set for release in mid-2015, at the earliest. Both notebooks adopt Intel's Bay Trail-T CR (BTCR) processors, while the for educational purposes will be manufactured with Elitegroup Computer Systems' (ECS) help and will be sold chiefly through the schooling channel that Intel and ECS built for their Classmate PC products. The finish cost for the product is estimated to be US$179. Meanwhile, the for the consumer market wi...

Machine learning offers insights into evolution of monkey faces, researchers find

Machine learning offers insights into evolution of monkey faces, researchers find Computers are able to use monkey facial patterns not only to correctly identify species, but also distinguish individuals within species, a team of scientists has found. Their findings, which rely on computer algorithms to identify guenon monkeys, suggest that machine learning can be a tool in studying evolution and help to identify the factors that have led to facial differentiation in monkey evolution. "Studying the cues that species use to discriminate each other often poses a challenge to scientists," explains James High am, an assistant professor of anthropology at New York University and one of authors of the study, which appears in the journal  Proceedings of the Royal Society B . "Many species are now rare and, in the case of these particular monkeys, they live high in the rain forest canopy, so are very difficult to reach." "Driving our study was the premise tha...

Bringing texture to your flat touchscreen with virtual bumps

Image
Bringing texture to your flat touchscreen with virtual bumps Northwestern University and Carnegie Mellon University researchers now report a fascinating discovery that provides insight into how the brain makes sense of data from fingers. In a study of people drawing their fingers over a flat surface that has two "virtual bumps," the research team is the first to find that, under certain circumstances, the subjects feel only one bump when there really are two. Better yet, the researchers can explain why the brain comes to this conclusion. Their new mathematical model and experimental results on "haptic illusions" could one day lead to flat-screen displays featuring active touch-back technology, such as making your touchscreen's keyboard actually feel like a keyboard. Tactile information also could benefit the blind, users of dashboard technology in cars, players of video games and more. "Touch is so important in our real world, but it is neglecte...

US gamer sets world record after playing on Mount Everest (Ubisoft/David Morton) Next For most gamers, gaming is an indoors hobby, with the exception of maybe a quick game on Angry Birds on the bus. However, one 23-year-old has taken gaming to completely new heights, setting a new world record after playing a video game on Mount Everest. In anticipation of the release of “Far Cry 4” - the latest installment of the first-person shooter adventure series set in a region of the Himalayas - producers Ubisoft chose lucky fan, and Utah native, William Cruz as the winner of its “Quest for Everest: The Gaming Journey of a Lifetime” contest, in which he won the opportunity to make the journey up Everest and play the game with a spectacular view in front of him. Although a keen hiker, Cruz was no hardened traveler and had never been outside of the United States before. He had to file for a passport to be able to make the trip. Yet, far from being a gimmicky jaunt, Cruz t...

US Navy unveils firefighting robot

US Navy unveils firefighting robot SAFFiR undergoes testing aboard the Naval Research Laboratory's ex-USS Shadwell in Mobile, Ala.  (U.S. Navy photo by John F. Williams/Released) A firefighting prototype robot was unveiled at the Naval Future Force Science & Technology EXPO in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. Scientists also revealed details of the technology’s successful trials aboard the USS Shadwell, a decommissioned Navy vessel, last fall. Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot (SAFFiR) walked across uneven floors, used thermal imaging technology to identify overheated equipment, and used a hose to extinguish a small fire in a series of experiments. SAFFiR is part of the Naval Prototype program Damage Control Technologies for the 21st Century or DC-21 – a  program  that aims to improve shipboard situation awareness and damage control capabilities with new tech. The two-legged humanoid robot was ...

Cold War bomber technology still playing key role

Cold War bomber technology still playing key role Sept. 28, 2006: This file photo provided by the U.S. Air Force shows an F-15C Eagle from the 12th Fighter Squadron at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, flying next to a Russian Tu-95 "Bear" bomber, right, during a Russian exercise which brought the bomber near the west coast of Alaska.  (AP/US Air Force) Photographs of NATO fighter jets monitoring Russian military aircraft as they approached the  airspace  of NATO countries in recent months revealed more than just President Putin flexing his muscles in response to sanctions against Russia for its support of Ukrainian separatist rebels. They also indicate that Russian bomber technology from the 1950s was built to last, perhaps for far longer than many anticipated. The appearance of the veteran Soviet long range nuclear-capable bombers is however in stark contrast to the relative modernity of the high-tech American F-15, European Lightning, and other...
