Apple Unveils iPhoto Replacement

On Thursday, Apple unveiled its new "Photos" app - expected to replace both iPhoto and Aperture - with the beta version of OS X 10.10.3.

Last year, Apple announced that its iPhoto and Aperture apps would be going away. At June's Worldwide Developers Conference, the Cupertino tech giant showed off the application that would take their place: Photos. "With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture. When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS," said Apple at the time. Now, the beta version of Photos has rolled out to developers, bundled in OS X Yosemite 10.10.3.

"Photos for OS X" features a streamlined design, similar to the existing Photos app on iOS. The new Mac app is highly-integrated with Apple's iCloud Photo Library, offering users access to their photos from their Mac and iOS devices, anytime. Photos uses Moments, Collections, and Years views to organize photos and videos by time and location, making it easier for users to find the image they are looking for with ease. Photos features filters, editing tools, and even offers a way for users to create prints, photo books, cards, and calendars using their images. Users get 5 GB of free storage in iCloud which is upgradeable up to 1 TB. The OS X 10.10.3 update is expected to roll out to the public in the spring
